Niyati Tamaskar

Title of Talk : Cultural bias and stigma associated with cancer

She promotes STEM education and strives to prioritize engineering careers among minorities. Niyati immigrated to the United States from India in 2001. She lives in Columbus, Indiana (USA), with her husband and their two children. Her hobbies include cooking, traveling the world and writing. She has authored a book called Unafraid: A Survivor’s Quest for Human Connection, a memoir about her cancer journey and the challenges of being a young survivor.

Ethan Crough

Title of Talk : A Cure for "Acondrophobia"

Ethan Crough is a middle school technology education teacher where his students learn everything from how to build a nest box for birds to how to leave a good voicemail.  His diverse work background includes being an executive director and board member for nonprofit organizations, public speaker, educator, guide, and improvisational actor. The first time he remembers engaging a crowd was while watching concrete being poured at his family’s apartment building in Princeton, New Jersey when he was six.  He still enjoys talking to complete strangers and loves seeing connections in life that make great stories. Ethan is an avid outdoorsman and has been to over half of the national parks in the United States. He loves traveling, playing games and sports, and eating great food with his wife and two kids.  Ethan presents a case that the acceptance of differences, like the dwarfism he was born with, is one of the keys to saving humanity as we know it. He says too many people are unaware and afraid of differences - making them easier to get rid of through gene editing in the future. Instead of seeing Dwarfism as a detriment, he challenges us to start seeing the innovation and creativity that come with all of our differences and how that has been key to humanity’s progress. In this moving talk, he says that if we learn to see differences differently then we have a chance to save ourselves.

Kel McBride

Title of Talk : A Brush with Death

Kel McBride, MLS, CEOLS, the Lively Death Lady, is a death and dying educator for younger, healthier people. Her specialty is helping people make unique, informed plans in sync with their values and ethics. From health care to legacy, McBride makes the morbid intriguing and surprisingly fun.

Kand McQueen

Title of Talk : Changing Perspectives on Sex, Gender, Humanity, and the World

Kand McQueen is a nationally-recognized keynote speaker on issues of gender identity.  Beginning while still a graduate student, Dr. McQueen has been speaking on this topic for over 18 years to a variety of student, professional, and community audiences in settings ranging from academic conferences and high school, college, and university campuses to mental health centers, churches, synagogues and community forums to appearances on community radio and public television.  Dr. McQueen earned a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with a specialization in Inquiry Methodology from Indiana University’s School of Education, and formerly served as graduate faculty at two universities. Dr. McQueen is committed to educating about the existence of those who fall outside the dichotomous categories of male and female, and in the process, facilitate societal understanding and acceptance of all human beings.  For more information, see www.kandmcqueen.com As a people, we have chosen to obsess upon our differences and exclude those who do not fit our conventional categorizations despite our common humanity.  In this presentation, Dr. Kand McQueen suggests four perspectival shifts that together formulate an alternative to this polarization. The result is a broader and richer conceptualization of humanity; one that has room for all persons, everywhere.

Emily Phelps

Title of Talk : More than just depression: a postpartum mental health journey

Emily has spent the last decade as a project manager and corporate trainer in the healthcare sector. She currently works for IU Health as a talent development consultant. In 2019, she started her own business, Matrescence Postpartum Care, to provide educational and social support to new and expecting families in the Bloomington community. She is currently pursuing formal certification as both a birth and postpartum doula though DONA international. She has her Master's in Leadership Development with a research focus in how adult learners retain information. All of her work, regardless of venue, revolves around ensuring others have space to speak, be heard, and tools to cultivate their confidence. Emily is a transplant to Bloomington, Indiana from Central Illinois. She has been in the Hoosier State for 11 years and lives in Ellettsville with her husband, Tom, and their 2-year-old son, Anthony. She’s an avid swimmer, a well-intentioned gardener, and a hopelessly unskilled piano player.  People say having a baby changes everything. And for Emily Phelps, it certainly did. Her unexpected struggle with postpartum depression forced her to reexamine everything she thought she knew about becoming a mother. Her humor and down-to-earth story sheds a light on a topic that's not talked about nearly enough. Through a firsthand account of her experience, she helps listeners understand disorders like these and what they can do for friends and family who might find themselves in a similar situation after the arrival of a new baby.
